What Affects Laminate Flooring Installation Cost
Installed laminate runs $3.39 to $7.39 per sq ft on Home Depot's published labour rate and shelf prices checked on 13 October 2026. These 8 factors move a quote up or down from there. Where a factor has a published price we show it with its source; where it does not, we say so rather than guess.
Factor 1: Material Quality and Grade
Plank grade is the biggest variable you control. On a 400 sq ft job, the cheapest budget planks come to $436 and the dearest premium planks $1,756, a gap of $1,320 in materials alone (both with 10% waste).
| Tier | Material Cost / sqft | Example on the shelf | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | $0.99 to $1.39 | 7mm. FairOaks Carey Lane (AC3, 30-year residential warranty) and Hampstead Otter Cove (AC3), no attached pad (Floor & Decor) | Spare bedroom, home office, rental |
| Entry-Mid | $1.43 to $1.79 | 8mm. HydroShield Plus 8mm lines (Floor & Decor) | Secondary bedrooms, low-traffic areas |
| Mid-Range | $1.89 to $2.99 | 12mm. Home Decorators Collection Vanderbilt Oak and Pergo Outlast+ XL (Home Depot): AC4, pre-attached pad. HydroShield Plus Timberland Oak 10mm (Floor & Decor): AC4, attached XPS pad, lifetime residential warranty | Living room, primary bedroom, hallway |
| Premium | $2.99 to $3.99 | 12mm. AquaGuard Performance Cocoa and Suncrest (Floor & Decor): AC5, attached IXPE pad, lifetime residential warranty. Bruce Rich Woodland (Home Depot): AC4, pre-attached pad | Main living areas, busy households |
Regular shelf prices on 13 October 2026; Home Depot's own guide gives a national laminate range of $0.79 to $3.00 per sq ft. Store prices vary by location.
Factor 2: Room Size and Shape
Cost scales with floor area, and awkward shapes add cutting time. Only one shape effect has a published number: the waste allowance for a diagonal layout. For the rest, ask each installer how they price it, so you compare like with like.
Fewest cuts. Order 10% extra planks for waste and defects.
About $37 to $59 more in mid-range planks on a 400 sq ft room. Every row is cut at an angle.
More angle cuts and more offcuts. Asymmetric rooms take longer to lay out.
Built-in wardrobes, bay windows and closets need fitted cuts around the perimeter.
Each doorway where laminate meets a lower floor needs a transition piece (94 in reducer, Floor & Decor), plus fitting time.
A kitchen island, hearth or radiator pipes each need a fitted cut.
Waste allowances: Home Decorators Collection laminate installation instructions (up to 5% defect tolerance plus 5% cutting waste, 10% on a diagonal).
Factor 3: Subfloor Condition
Subfloor preparation is the most variable part of a quote, and no retailer we checked publishes a per-square-foot prep price. Home Depot's guide says projects range in price with needs such as subfloor preparation, so ask what prep your installer has allowed for, in writing.
| Subfloor Condition | What it needs | Material price we could verify |
|---|---|---|
| Clean, level wood subfloor | Light cleaning, check for squeaks. Standard installation. | None beyond the install |
| Uneven wood subfloor | Sanding high spots, filling or levelling low spots. | Self-leveler $30.89 per 50 lb bag (Mapei Ultraplan 1 Plus); coverage depends on depth |
| Concrete slab | A moisture barrier under a floating floor. The Home Decorators Collection instructions call for 6 mil polyethylene film. | Polyethylene moisture film about $0.23/sqft; foam with vapour barrier $0.40 to $0.60/sqft |
| Concrete with dips or ridges | High spots ground down, low spots filled with leveling compound. | Self-leveler $30.89 per 50 lb bag |
| Damaged wood subfloor (rot or soft spots) | Structural repair before any flooring goes down; may need a carpenter as well as the flooring installer. | Quote only |
The most common quote dispute: an installer quotes a per-sqft price, arrives, finds an uneven subfloor and adds prep charges. Prevent it by having the subfloor inspected before the quote and the prep scope written into it.
Factor 4: Old Flooring Removal
Many laminate quotes assume a bare subfloor. Home Depot puts removal at $1.95 per sq ft on average, depending on the floor type and effort, which is about $780 on a 400 sq ft room. The notes below explain why some floors take more effort than others; we found no published per-type prices.
| Existing Floor Type | DIY? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Carpet | Yes, easy | Cut into strips, pull up, remove tack strips and staples. |
| Vinyl sheet / linoleum | Yes, moderate | Glued vinyl may leave adhesive residue that needs scraping. |
| Vinyl tile | Check first | Old flooring can contain asbestos. The EPA advises not to sand or try to level asbestos flooring or its backing, and to install new floor covering over it if possible. Get it tested before you disturb it. |
| Existing laminate | Yes | Click-lock laminate comes up easily. Glue-down is harder and may damage the subfloor. |
| Ceramic / porcelain tile | Hard, not recommended | Chisel and hammer work risks subfloor damage. |
| Hardwood | No | Nail-down hardwood removal is slow and can damage the subfloor. |
Money-saving tip: carpet is the easiest floor to remove yourself before the installer arrives. At Home Depot's average removal rate, a 12x12 bedroom is about $281 you would not pay. Moving the furniture out yourself saves its $35 furniture charge too.
Factor 5: Underlayment Type
Home Depot says laminate always needs an underlayment, and its national range is $0.29 to $0.79 per sq ft. Every mid-range and premium plank we priced has its pad attached: Home Depot lists Vanderbilt Oak, Pergo Outlast+ XL and Bruce Rich Woodland as "Underlayment Required - Pre-Attached", and Floor & Decor lists an attached IXPE foam pad on AquaGuard Performance. So our mid-range and premium totals add no second layer. Over concrete, Floor & Decor says a 6 mil poly vapor barrier is still needed.
| Underlayment Type | Cost / sqft | When needed |
|---|---|---|
| Basic foam | $0.30 | Over a wood subfloor in dry rooms. Home Depot's example price. |
| Foam + vapour barrier | $0.40 to $0.60 | Over concrete, where a moisture barrier is needed (EZ Foam and Sentinel Protect Plus, Floor & Decor). |
| Polyethylene moisture film | $0.23 | Under a floating floor on concrete; the Home Decorators Collection instructions call for 6 mil film. |
| Acoustic premium foam | $0.60 to $0.79 | Upstairs rooms and apartments, for sound (Sentinel Quiet Premium, Eco Ultra Quiet, Floor & Decor). |
| Attached pad (built in) | Included in plank price | Check the plank's instructions before adding a second layer under an attached pad. |

Factor 6: Transitions and Finishing Details
Trim pieces are easy to leave out of a quote. These are Floor & Decor shelf prices for laminate trim on 13 October 2026; fitting them is labour on top, so ask whether your quote includes it.
| Item | Cost | Where used |
|---|---|---|
| Quarter round (94 in) | $14.99 to $17.19 each ($1.91 to $2.19/lf) | Along baseboards to cover the expansion gap |
| Reducer (94 in) | $37.99 to $42.79 each | Where laminate meets a lower surface |
| Stair nose (94 in) | $40.99 to $44.99 each ($5.23 to $5.74/lf) | Step edges and landing edges |
Factor 7: Geographic Location
Labour is where location shows up. The BLS mean wage for floor layers (May 2025) is $29.69 an hour nationally, from $21.45 in Texas to $41.97 in Massachusetts. Below, Home Depot's national $2.00 to $3.00 per sq ft labour range is scaled by each region's wage against the national mean. That assumes local prices track local wages, so read these as estimates.
| Region (states with BLS data) | Labour Rate (estimate) | vs National Avg | Mean wage |
|---|---|---|---|
| US national average | $2.00 to $3.00/sqft | Baseline | $29.69/hr |
| Northeast (CT, ME, MA, NJ, NY, PA, VT) | $2.41 to $3.61/sqft | +20% | $35.71/hr |
| Midwest (IL, IN, IA, KS, MI, MN, MO, ND, OH, SD, WI) | $1.95 to $2.93/sqft | -3% | $28.94/hr |

BLS suppresses Idaho's wage and publishes no estimate for Delaware, DC, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Rhode Island or Wyoming. Regions follow the US Census Bureau and are weighted by each state's floor-layer employment.
Always get quotes from local installers: a wage average cannot reflect your specific market. Pick your state in the calculator to see a full job priced this way.
Factor 8: Timing and Seasonality
We found no published price data showing seasonal discounts for flooring installation, so we do not quote one. If your dates are flexible, ask each installer whether a different start date changes the price or the wait, and get the answer in the quote.
